Barbara Goldman, the founder of BG Search Associates, has over 20 years of legal recruiting experience. She holds degrees in both mathematics and physics and was a physics instructor at Temple University and a physicist with the Naval Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren, Virginia. Prior to her career in legal recruiting, she owned a market research firm in New York City and recruited and moderated focus groups for large consumer products companies. In 1984, Barbara moved to Atlanta and opened the Atlanta office of Comsearch, an executive search firm specializing in the telecommunications industry. In 1994, Barbara began to specialize in Legal recruiting and launched BG Search Associates, a legal recruiting and consulting company in 2000. In 2005, she opened an office in New York City. Barbara is a recognized expert in successful practice group and law firm mergers as well as all levels of corporate attorney recruiting from staff attorneys to General Counsel Placements. Her clients are large law firms and multinational corporations of all sizes. She has been successful placing attorneys throughout Asia, Europe and South America. She has been successful in developing a very talented team of 9 legal recruiters including four former partners at top law firms and has grown the company by at least 20% each year. Recently, Barbara has traveled to Seoul, South Korea, China and Vietnam, and has successfully begun recruiting attorneys for both Asian and American Corporations in these countries. She has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Georgia Women’s Business Counsel since 2004 where she serves on the Executive Committee and co-chairs the Board Development Committee. She also serves on the Governing Board of the Women's Enterprise National Council Forum and is passionate about the mission of WBENC. BG Search Associates was the recipient of the 2005 Georgia Women’s Business Counsel Trailblazer Award, and Barbara Goldman was named the 2007 Georgia Women’s Business Counsel Advocate of the year for her initiatives in supporting Women’s Businesses in Georgia. She is also a member of NALSC (National Association of Legal Search Consultants). Barbara has 3 children and 2 grandchildren and enjoys playing bridge, hiking and golf.
Brian D. Poe, Esq. – Director, Legal Recruiting
Brian D. Poe, Esq. is Director of Legal Recruiting at BG Search Associates. Brian is a graduate of Florida State University, where he earned his B.S. in 3 years, majoring in Multinational Business Operations. He is also a graduate of the University of Georgia (M.B.A.), and University of Virginia School of Law (J.D.). He is formerly President of the University of Virginia School of Law's Sports and Entertainment Law Forum. Prior to joining BG Search, Brian was Senior Attorney for Delta Air Lines, Inc. in Atlanta. He also is formerly an Associate at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius (Washington, D.C.) and Troutman Sanders (Atlanta), and he clerked at King & Spalding (Atlanta) and Brooks, Pierce, McClendon, Humphrey & Leonard (Greensboro, NC) law firms as a law student. In all of his prior legal positions, Brian was involved in and passionate about recruiting. At BG Search, Brian has been very successful at all levels of legal recruiting and attorney placements, including new business development, individual partner placements in national law firms, relocations, as well as high-profile attorney placements at law firms and Fortune 500 companies. He has lectured on national panels with respect to diversity recruiting and other aspects of legal recruiting. Brian is originally from Atlanta, and his current interests include filmmaking and sports. For the last three years through present, he has served as General Counsel of The Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Prior to law school, Brian was an auditor with the United States Department of Labor for two years.
Joel S. Goldman
Joel graduated from New York University with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. He began his career as a computer designer with IBM Corporation spending extended periods in Great Britain and Germany coordinating hardware and software design efforts of IBM's European and American laboratories on several "mainframe" computers. He then attended law school at Fordham University in New York where he was a member of the Fordham Law Review. Upon graduating law school, Joel worked as a patent attorney with Darby & Darby, P.C., a nationally known Patent and Trademark firm. Joel came to Atlanta in 1985 to establish and head the in-house patent department at Scientific-Atlanta, Inc.(a Fortune 250 provider of cable television equipment). In 1988, he joined Troutman Sanders, L.L.P. to form its patent and trademark department, and led that department until the end of 2000, having grown it to over twenty attorneys. Joel has experience in all phases of U.S. and foreign intellectual property law, including patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, litigation and licensing. Joel's current practice focuses on counseling companies in the development, enforcement and use of intellectual property, especially with regard to telecommunications and business methods. Joel is the Past Chair of the Atlanta Chapter of the Licensing Executive Society of the United States and Canada (LES), and Past Chair of the China committee of the LES. He was also Chair of the Asia Practice Committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). He served as the Chair of the Patent, Trademark and Copyright section of the Georgia Bar in 1993-94 and chaired the special committee of the Georgia Bar which drafted the Georgia Trade Secrets Act of 1990. Joel has spoken frequently in the United States and Asia regarding intellectual property law issues and his views on business method patents have been quoted in publications such as Entrepreneur, Of Counsel, and Inside Litigation. Among his publications are: "New Regulations May Heighten Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in China," Intellectual Property & The Law (Summer 1998), "Patentability of Business Methods," Intellectual Property & The Law (Fall 1996), "Building a Flexible Practice Group Structure," Law Firm Governance (Summer 1999), "The State Street Bank Case -- Its Implications to Financial Institutions," Intellectual Property Today, (January 1999), "Yes, Your Method of Doing Business is Patentable (Increased Protection for Software Inventions)," Intellectual Property & The Law (Winter 1999). Joel offers specialized expertise in a wide variety of intellectual property and technology placements including recruiting of Intellectual Property associates and partners, assisting corporations and law firms in establishing Patent Departments.
Jessica is the Chief Operating Officer at BG Search Associates. Jessica is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and has successfully completed the FastTrac Business Development Program affiliated with the Kaufman Foundation sponsored by The Home Depot. Jessica has 6 years of attorney recruiting experience and is an expert in in-house attorney search. She has been very active on the business development side and specializes in Real Estate and Corporate attorney searches. She has been the “go-to” person for our Real Estate and Retail Clients throughout the U.S. and Asia. Jessica grew up in Atlanta and is an avid tennis player.
Al earned JD from Georgia State University college of Law where he earned CALI awards for his performance in Basic Federal Taxation and Race Law. Al earned his bachelors degree in Political Science at Duke University and holds graduate degrees in Law and Political Science from Georgia State University. During his second and third years of law school, Al served on the Southern Region and the National Executive Boards of Directors for the Black Law Students Association. Before entering law school, Al first worked briefly in electoral politics as a voter empowerment coordinator for the NAACP. Al draws his passion for recruiting from his genuine interest in people and his solid background in business. As a recruiter, Al has found success by matching the needs of his extensive and diverse network of young professionals with law firms and corporations. Felicity is a recruiter at BG Search Associates and a graduate of Spellman College. Felicity is originally from Maryland and has previous experience in diversity training, marketing and mediation. She is now becoming an expert at researching, developing and executing cold call lists, in order to find qualified candidates to present to clients. Gail Koch – Director, New York Office
Gail Koch is the Director of our New York City Office. Gail is a graduate of Temple University and enjoyed great success in the telecommunication field, having been employed at AT&T, MCI, and Rolm as a revenue provider. In 1983 Gail started CAS/COMSEARCH, a search company that has been providing exceptional staff for some of the largest corporation in the U.S. Among her Clients are Sprint, British Telecom, Verizon, and Nortel. She has provided presidents, sales, marketing and support to a myriad of Corporations. In addition, she has clients in retail, such as Children's Place and Celestial Seasonings. Gail has been successful in providing attorneys for all levels of attorneys for corporate legal departments including General Counsel Searches.
